Expert offers tips on how to buy better wine

We enlisted the help of Kevin Lentz, owner of the French Grocery Market on 7th Avenue and Missouri. For the better part of a year, Lentz has been sharing his passion for wine on YouTube.

He said so many people had so many of the same questions so he decided this was the best way to answer them all at once. "A lot of times they're saying, 'I really like red blends point me to a red blend', but that will lend itself to a conversation."

In our conversation, he breaks down some of the basics just in time for the upcoming holiday parties.

"I love Beaujolais, especially around the holidays. Beaujolais Nuveau is released in November right in time for Thanksgiving. It's a low tannin, light red wine, that goes great with turkey, sage, stuffing, all the stuff we have on the table."

This may be surprising to you.

He said most of the wines in the grocery store wine aisle are produced by the same three to four big companies so if you're looking for a good everyday wine, Lentz said do a little research. "Look for unique wines and that doesn't mean the most expensive."

But he said it should mean from a specific area. "If it just says California red wine that can mean it was literally made from grapes up and down the coast so it could've been bought on the commodities market. If you're looking for something that's a really good every day work horse look for a producer that makes a higher end then get their less expensive Beaujolais."

When in doubt this holiday season, he said don't shy away from champagne.

"When you're celebrating, commemorating, I would always say bubbles. It's great in the summer in our climate when it's hot, refreshing, great at holiday table as well. It's great on Christmas Eve, it's great on Thanksgiving. when you're celebrating an anniversary this is what we do, we have champagne."

And, he said, if you don't want to spend that much, a nice sparkling wine will work as well.
